Split Pigeon Pea (Toor or Arhar Dal) is the key ingredient for this sambar recipe.

Toor Dal

Pressure Cook Dal with vegetables, tomato, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garlic, salt and water.

Step 1

Heat ghee. Add mustard seeds, red chillies, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Saute for 30 to 40 seconds

Step 2

Add onion and drumsticks. Fry till drumsticks are tender.

Step 3

Add boiled sambar over the tadka. Stir to combine. Allow it to simmer. 

Step 4

Add tamarind paste, jaggery, and sambar powder. Allow sambar to simmer over low heat for 15 minutes.

Step 5

Serve Sambar with idli, vada, and dosa.
